What’s unexpectedly different?

Posted by anandrr on March 2, 2008

Continuing on with the theme of differences, the other question of course is what I find unexpectedly different about India from the US that is making it hard to adjust.

This one is easy. It has to do with IST. Now of course I had known all along about Indian Stretchable Time. Why you see it in the US also when you have to go to a desi party scheduled to start at 1pm, and the hosts arrive around 2. But of course it extends to Indian business also. All in all it took me a while to realise that it’s one thing to have an appointment at 1pm. The thing to do is to call before you leave and verify that the other party intends getting to the meeting on time. Being late to a meeting is quite alright, and it is not even expected that there be an explanatory phone call before or ahead. Indeed, it is quite alright to not even bother to remember about the meeting and be fashionably late. All in all, it’s taken me a few months to get the routine down. Set up the meeting – Call before you leave home/office for the meeting to verify that the meeting is on – Then and only then leave for the meeting. Under no circumstances are you to assume that just because you’ve set up a meeting time that the meeting will actually happen on time. You see, things tend to happen.
