Perfidious Google Maps

Posted by anandrr on November 4, 2009

Over the weekend, I find myself at the intersection of Mathilda and Maude in Sunnyvale and I decide I need to go to a Walgreens or Longs or something. So I duly type in “pharmacy” into my Jesus Phone Google Maps and what does it show me?

Google Maps screen shot Google Search PageThere’s a Walgreen just off Fair Oaks. The location looks a little dubious, why would there be a Walgreen just off the main road, but maybe it covers an entire block. I haven’t ever seen a Walgreen at the location indicated, but maybe I haven’t been paying attention. So off I go to this location, and of course there is no Walgreen at this place. Quite annoying, to say the least. I assume that perhaps Google Maps is confused and get on with the rest of my life. On a whim, I pull up Google on my iPhone the next day and search for pharmacies in sunnyvale, and I find that Google search on the iPhone also thinks there’s a pharmacy at that location. Only it’s a Longs. And here’s what’s really cool about this. The address says El Camino Real, but the location on the map says Fair Oaks and just north of Maude. WTF? Seriously, WTF?

Thoughts About the Nobel Peace Prize and Obama

Posted by anandrr on October 9, 2009

I’m not sure that awarding the prize to Obama devalues it any more than it has already been devalued by being awarded to Kissinger and Arafat.

First they gave the prize to the guy who lost to G.W. Bush. Now they’re giving it to the guy who succeeded him. Next year, give it to W’s parents and Jeb and they will have made their point abundantly clear. Talk about your soft bigotry of low expectations.

What, did the world suddenly run out of polio-eliminating and poverty-alleviating organizations?

As my friend Ravi says, they should have given Obama the Literature Prize instead, for the artful and innovative use of language to try and create world peace.

Arnie Pulls a Kim Jong Il

Posted by anandrr on September 2, 2009

Yet again a foreign state-head with a liking for Hollywood action movies has imprisoned a citizen of the free world on what the victim claims are made-up charges. We tried to send our ex-President to rescue the poor sod, but he was unreasonably frisked and detained at the airport and never made it off the ground. The bastards! They thought of everything. Perhaps we should send Shah Rukh (his name is Khan!) to distract the prison guards with his dancing while Mr Jon sashays away to freedom.

Flashback Friday: He Forgot Poland

Posted by anandrr on October 3, 2008

We’re reminded today that barely four years ago, Bush told us at one of the “debates” that he would use the Dred Scott decision as a litmus test when thinking about his Supreme Court picks. Naturally liberals were surprised, it was nice and all that Bush had finally decided that Dred Scott was decided wrongly, here was something on which they could finally agree with their President. But 150 years after the case was decided and overturned by Constitutional amendment, and Civil Wars fought over it, he had decided that views on Dred Scott would be a litmus test? WTF? Had he just heard somebody say Dred Scott in the hallway and latched on to it? There was no way an ignoramus like Bush even knew what Dred Scott was all about. Then the mists cleared and it turned out that liberals were the only ones puzzled. Conservatives had heard him loud and clear: He would appoint judges who would overturn Roe v Wade.

So it was rather surprising that when Sarah Palin was asked a similar question, the only case she could think of was Roe v Wade. Is she so unschooled in right wing evangelical dog-whistles that she didn’t know that the right phrase to use is Dred Scott? Weird.

Flashback Friday: P.B. Sreenivas Gets a Makeover

Posted by anandrr on September 26, 2008

It’s Friday September 26th. Which can mean only one thing. Buddhivantha, the movie all of Karnataka is awaiting with bated breath has been released. Yay for Uppi! Ups is the superstar  who rules our lives! Yippee-dee-do!

But Mr Cranky here has detected the dark cloud within the silver lining. You see, Buddhivantha includes this grating number. You can’t go an hour on Radio Mirchi (Sakkath Hot Maga!) or any other local radio station without being subjected to this torture.

This would be a remix of the melodious If by remix, you mean sung by a dude who rolls his R’s like he just stepped off the plane fresh from his 20-year stay in the States, and anyway just as soon as he seems to get a hang of the melody gets interrupted quite rudely by interlopers from the “chorus.”

And anyway, WTF is that bark at the 2:02 mark? Seriously, WTF?

Stop Making Me Kill You

Posted by anandrr on September 24, 2008

A bunch of disgruntled workers got together and allegedly beat up the CEO of their company leading to his unfortunate death. Sad story. There are good ways to deal with the situation. Then there’s the Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister of Labour, way. Blame the CEO.

Describing the killing of L.K. Chaudhury, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of an Italy-based company Graziano Transmissioni in Greater Noida as a fallout of the “simmering discontent among the workers,” the government on Tuesday said, this should serve as a warning for managements.

“It is my appeal to the managements that the workers should be dealt with compassion,” Minister of Labour and Employment (Independent charge) Oscar Fernendes told journalists here.

There are disparities in the wages of permanent employees, contract and temporary workers. The workers should not be pushed so hard that they resort to whatever that had happened in Greater Noida, he said.

Well played Oscar. Well played.
